Raised or thick scars

Scar tissue that healed raised, firm or tight rather than flat.

Raised or thick scars

Some scars heal with collagen laid down in excess or in a disorganised way, leaving tissue that sits proud of the skin and often feels tight or tethered. Surgical scars, C-section scars and older body scarring commonly behave this way.

How we approach raised or thick scars

Treatment aims to encourage that tissue to remodel so it reads flatter and feels more pliable. Keloid scarring behaves differently and carries a risk of worsening. If you have formed keloids before, that is a conversation to have with a physician first.

Common signs of raised or thick scars

  • Scar tissue sitting above the surrounding skin
  • A firm or tight feel over the scar
  • Restricted movement where the scar tethers
  • Colour that differs from the skin around it

See a physician first. Skinholic provides cosmetic treatments only and does not diagnose or treat medical conditions. If anything on your skin is changing, painful, bleeding or will not heal, please see your family doctor or a dermatologist first.

What can contribute to raised or thick scars

  • Excess collagen laid down during healing
  • Surgery, injury or C-section
  • A natural tendency to scar heavily
  • Tension on the wound while it healed

Still deciding?

Let a practitioner look first.

The right treatment depends on what is driving the concern for you. A free consultation in Aldergrove is where that gets worked out.

Assessing a raised or thick scar before choosing a method

Your practitioner looks at how far the scar sits above the surrounding skin, how firm or tight it feels, and whether it tethers and restricts movement. They will ask whether it formed after surgery, injury or a C-section, whether the wound healed under tension, and how old it is, since newer scars may still be remodelling. Previous keloids matter, as you may be asked to see a physician first.

Scar Relaxation, using microneedling or Viva MD NanoFractional radiofrequency, is aimed at tissue that healed tight, raised or ridged, including surgical and C-section scars. Skin Resurfacing is weighed when the concern is a rough, uneven surface, and Microneedling w/ Exosomes may suit scarring alongside skin quality overall. For a C-section scar, your practitioner checks it is fully healed and mature enough, and discusses timing if you are still breastfeeding.

What happens when you come in?

Your first visit is a free consultation at the Aldergrove clinic. A practitioner looks at the area in good light, asks how long you have noticed it and what you have already tried, and checks anything that would affect which treatments are suitable: medication, recent sun exposure, previous treatments.

You then hear which of the options above suits your skin, what it realistically achieves, how many sessions it usually takes and what recovery looks like. If the honest answer is that none of them will give you what you want, or that something needs a doctor first, you will hear that instead.

Worth mentioning at your consultation

  • When you first noticed it, and whether it has changed since
  • Products and treatments you have already tried
  • Any medication, supplements or diagnosed skin conditions
  • Holidays, events or sun exposure you are planning around

Questions clients ask about raised or thick scars.

Keloids behave differently and can worsen with some treatments. If you have formed one before, tell us at the consultation. This is a case where we may ask you to see a physician before anything is planned.

Yes. Newer scars are often still remodelling and may respond more readily; older scars usually need more sessions. Both can be worth treating; the timeline differs.

It is a common request. Your practitioner will check the scar is fully healed and mature enough, and will discuss timing if you are still breastfeeding.
