Sun-damaged, weathered-looking skin

The cumulative result of years outdoors: pigment, roughness and a leathery quality together.

Sun-damaged, weathered-looking skin

Sun damage rarely shows up as one thing. Pigment, surface roughness, fine lines and a loss of clarity tend to arrive together, which is why treating only the brown marks often leaves the skin looking much the same.

How we approach sun-damaged, weathered-looking skin

Plans for sun damage are usually staged: pigment first or texture first depending on what dominates, with the other following once the skin has settled. Your practitioner will tell you which order yours calls for.

Common signs of sun-damaged, weathered-looking skin

  • Scattered pigment across the face, chest and hands
  • A rough, slightly leathery surface
  • Fine lines alongside the colour changes
  • Skin that looks older than it feels

See a physician first. Skinholic provides cosmetic treatments only and does not diagnose or treat medical conditions. If anything on your skin is changing, painful, bleeding or will not heal, please see your family doctor or a dermatologist first.

What can contribute to sun-damaged, weathered-looking skin

  • Cumulative sun exposure over decades
  • Outdoor work and sport without protection
  • Previous burns and tanning
  • Insufficient daily sun protection

Still deciding?

Let a practitioner look first.

The right treatment depends on what is driving the concern for you. A free consultation in Aldergrove is where that gets worked out.

Setting the order for sun-damaged, weathered skin

Because weathered skin tends to show several changes together, your practitioner looks at the whole picture: scattered pigment across the face, chest and hands, a rough and slightly leathery surface, and fine lines next to the colour changes. They ask about outdoor work and sport without protection, past burns and tanning, and your daily SPF habits, then judge whether pigment or texture dominates your skin.

That judgement sets the order, because treating both at once usually asks too much of the skin. Where pigment leads, Q-Switch 1064 Laser Rejuvenation or Cosmelan is often weighed; where roughness and lines lead, Skin Resurfacing works on the rough, uneven surface and Chemical Peels are chosen for fine lines and sun-related unevenness. It is not too late to start, though established damage generally needs a longer course than early damage.

What happens when you come in?

Your first visit is a free consultation at the Aldergrove clinic. A practitioner looks at the area in good light, asks how long you have noticed it and what you have already tried, and checks anything that would affect which treatments are suitable: medication, recent sun exposure, previous treatments.

You then hear which of the options above suits your skin, what it realistically achieves, how many sessions it usually takes and what recovery looks like. If the honest answer is that none of them will give you what you want, or that something needs a doctor first, you will hear that instead.

Worth mentioning at your consultation

  • When you first noticed it, and whether it has changed since
  • Products and treatments you have already tried
  • Any medication, supplements or diagnosed skin conditions
  • Holidays, events or sun exposure you are planning around

Before you book

Questions clients ask about sun-damaged, weathered-looking skin.

It depends on which dominates your skin, and that is a judgement your practitioner makes in person. Treating both at once usually asks too much of the skin at the same time.

No. Sun damage responds at any age, though established damage generally needs a longer course than early damage. You will be given a realistic picture at the consultation.

Anything changing, growing, bleeding or unlike your other marks belongs with your family doctor or a dermatologist first. We refer rather than treat when something looks atypical.
